CIA Field Double Agent Manual - Download

CIA Field Double Agent Manual

A Top-Secret until October 2018 manual published by the CIA in August 1960 titled, Field Double Agent Guide, and marked on every page, “KUBARK INTERNAL USE ONLY.” KUBARK was the CIA code name for the CIA. The manual is based on research by KUDESK (KUDESK was the CIA's code name for the CIA Counterintelligence Department).

"The double agent operation is one of the most demanding and complex counterintelligence activities in which an intelligence service can engage," begins an article about double-agents in an article appearing in the CIA's official classified journal in 1962, by an unidentified writer using the name, "F.M. Begoum."

The manual covers a wide range of subjects involved in running a double agent (DA). From the introduction:

"For the past two years KUDESK has been engaged in a detailed analysis of KUBARK double agent cases. The results have been collated, and the findings have been disseminated within headquarters in a study which is also available to the field upon request.

This guide is intended for field use by case officers and others concerned with DA operations. It represents both the above research and the views of a number of experienced and senior KUBARK officers."

CIA Journal Studies in Intelligence

In addition to the manual is an article from the CIA's official journal, "Studies in Intelligence," published in 1962 titled, "Observations on the Double Agent," attributed to "F.M. Begoum."
