World War II: U.S. Navy Northern Group Monthly War Diaries/Journals

World War II: U.S. Navy Northern Group Monthly War Diaries/Journals

4,632 pages of monthly war diaries dating from March 1942 to August 1945.

The purpose of the Monthly War Diaries or Journals was to summarize all offshore activity which was conducted by the various units making up a task force known as the Northern Group, a task force of the Eastern Sea Frontier under the command of the Assistant Commandant of the First Naval District. The Monthly War Diaries were compiled from duty reports and logs submitted by subordinate units. Also incorporated into the Diaries was information from the correspondence of the various unit commanders and the Commander of the Northern Group (the Assistant Commandant of the First Naval District). Copies of the Monthly War Diaries were also sent to the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Fleet for the study of organizational and operational problems and for historical purposes.

Entries cover the activities of the subordinate units (Northern Shiplane Patrol, the Naval Local Defense Force, the Northern Civil Air Patrol, the Coastal Pickets, and the Coastal Force), and emphasize operations carried out for security of merchant marine and naval convoys, anti-submarine patrols, mine sweeping, training, air patrols, and rescue operations.

Information is presented in the form of brief narratives about daily unit operations (other than routine patrols), orders received, exercises and training undertaken, security evaluations, operational intelligence, and includes a calendar of events that summarizes major operations, unusual occurrences, and enemy contacts such as submarine sightings.

Copies of relevant documents, such as inspection reports, reports of investigations, and various issuances and directives, are often attached in appendices. Also included may be plans for operations, such as communications plans, and maps of operations, patrol, and sweep areas that indicate the location of enemy submarine sightings. Introductory information for each month summarizes the state of organization, personnel, and equipment on the first day of the month, citing the appropriate operation plan and area of operation.
