The files in this compilation detail the FBI’s role in investigating UFO sightings reported between 1947 and 1954.

This collection contains 1,616 pages of files copied from FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., covering reported sightings of unidentified/unexplained flying objects. In 1947, a series of reports made their way to the FBI. The FBI was interested in interviewing those who reported UFO sightings by members of the United States military, especially from the Air Force.

The FBI received many reports and worked for a time with the Air Force to investigate these matters. The files cover a wide variety of reported sightings, ranging from multiple witness sightings of a flying object in Philadelphia, to a Navy pilot's report of a UFO over Myrtle Creek, Oregon, to a cardboard box painted silver.

FBI Files Project Blue Book File Number 62 - 83894

13 pages of FBI files dated between 1977 and 1989, summarizing the existence and dissolution of Project Blue Book. Project Blue Book was the code name for the systematic study of unidentified flying objects by the United States Air Force from March 1952 to its termination on December 17, 1969.

National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena FBI Files

81 pages of FBI files with miscellaneous information on a private organization called National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena. National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) was founded in the 1950s to research reports of UFO phenomenon. Between 1957 and 1969, NICAP and its members periodically communicated with the FBI. This collection consists of this correspondence.

Silas M. Newton FBI Files

A collection of 77 pages of FBI files that covers the FBI’s investigations into Newton’s fraudulent activities between 1951 and 1970.

Silas Newton (1887-1972) was a prominent oil producer and notorious conman who professed to possess a device capable of detecting minerals and oil. He was cited as an authority in Frank Scully’s book Behind the Flying Saucers, which purported to document several UFO crashes in New Mexico. In 1950, Newton asserted that a flying saucer had crashed on land he leased in the Mojave Desert. However, in 1952, he retracted his claim, admitting that he had never personally witnessed a flying saucer and had merely reiterated hearsay from others.

On July 8, 1947, the FBI Dallas Field Office sent a teletype regarding a “flying disc” that resembled a high-altitude weather balloon found near Roswell, New Mexico.
