The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) is the primary law enforcement agency in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.  It was founded in 1867, thirteen years after the Saint Paul Police Department was formed in 1854. The city of Minneapolis is divided into five police precincts. As of June 2020, the MPD employed sworn police officers and 300 civilian employees.

Death of George Perry Floyd - May 25, 2020

On May 25, 2020, George Perry Floyd (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020), a black man, died in Minneapolis Police custody, during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill.

Derek Michael Chauvin (born March 19, 1976) , a white MPD police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down in the street,.  Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The complaint was amended, adding a second-degree murder charge. Three other officers were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.


Death of Justine Damond Ruszczyk - July 15, 2017

On July 15, 2017, Justine Maia Damond (née Ruszczyk) (April 4, 1977 – July 15, 2017), a 40-year-old Australian-American woman, was fatally shot by Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Mohamed Noor (born October 20, 1985), a Somali-American. Damond-Ruszczyk called 9-1-1 to report the possible assault of a woman in an alley behind her house. On March 20, 2018, Noor was arrested and charged. On April 2019, Noor was convicted of third-degree murder and manslaughter. He was later sentenced to 12.5 years in prison.  A lawsuit brought by the family was settled for $20 million, one of the largest-ever settlements in a suit involving a police killing.


Blevins, Thurman Jr. June 23, 2018 Officer-Involved Shooting - MPD Police responded to a 911 call of a man outdoors firing a gun into the air. On arriving, they found Blevins, who was armed. Blevins began to run away. Blevins was shot in the back during a foot chase.


Ketamine - Office of Police Conduct Review Report on Ketamine Use on Detainees and Suspects – In 2018, the Star Tribune reported that Minneapolis police officers dozens of times asked emergency medical responders to use the tranquilizer ketamine to sedate suspects and others who were restrained.

Travis Matthew Jordan, November 9, 2018 -  Officer-Involved Shooting -  Responding to a report of a suicidal man, a MPD officer shot Jordan when he failed to drop a large kitchen knife and ran toward officers.
