In
the Whitechapel neighborhood of London, England during the late 1800's, several
gruesome murders of women took place. The murders were met with extensive
newspaper coverage. The name "Jack
the Ripper" was taken from the "Dear Boss" letter dated
September 25, 1888, which was sent to the Central News Agency of London,
written by a person presenting themself as the murderer.
This
along with worldwide press attention lead to the various "Jack the
Ripper" narratives. At first approximately 11 murders were attributed to “Jack
the Ripper."
In
time this war whittled down to the 5 murders of Mary Ann Nichols, Annie
Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly, between 1888
and 1891.
