Harry Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884. During World War I, Truman was commissioned a first lieutenant, later a captain, and was discharged as a major in 1919. Harry Truman ran a haberdashery business from 1919 to 1921. After studying Law at Kansas City Law School, Truman was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court in 1922. In 1926 he became a presiding judge. Truman was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1934; and reelected in 1940. Harry Truman was elected Vice President of the United States on the Democratic ticket, with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1944. Upon the death of President Roosevelt, on April 12, 1945, Truman became the thirty-third President of the United States. Harry Truman was elected President in 1948. Deciding not to run again at the end of the term, President Truman retired to Independence, Missouri. Harry Truman died at age 88 in Kansas City, Missouri on December 26, 1972.
